SUMMARY:POSTPONED Frontiers of Science: Prof. Ellen Rothenberg
DESCRIPTION:\n\nPOSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER 12th\nOn-site event\nPresidentti aud
itorium\, BioCity\n\nProf. Ellen Rothenberg\, California Institute of Tech
nology\, USA\nEpigenomic and gene regulatory network mechanisms controllin
g the dynamics of early T cell lineage commitment\nHost: Riitta Lahesmaa (
rilahes@utu.fi)\n\nCoffee and sandwich at 11:45\, first come first served!
\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSix PhD researchers and early-career postdocs are welcome t
o have a lunch in restaurant Mauno and discuss with Prof. Rothenberg after
the seminar. This is a great possibility to learn hosting skills in frien
dly environment and create connections for future. Everyone is welcome to
join\, BioCity Turku will offer the lunch.\n\nIf you got interested\, plea
se send an email to biocityturku@bioscience.fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe Rothenber
g group studies the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for developm
ental lineage choice as hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into T lymp
hocytes. This is a complex process in which stem-cell multipotentiality is
lost in steps that actually overlap with the initiation of T-cell specifi
c differentiation events. Thus\, it offers unique insights into the nature
of "stem-ness" and the distinction between activation of a development pr
ogram and irreversible commitment to that program. The approaches used in
the lab are a combination of in vitro developmental biology\, high-resolut
ion characterization of individual cell developmental states\, and molecul
ar genetics of gene regulation. The Rothenberg group focuses on identifyin
g the transcription factors and signaling events that induce T-lineage gen
e expression in an uncommitted precursor and determine also how they work
to force the cell to relinquish other developmental options. Kinetic disse
ction of this complex process using in vitro differentiation systems and r
etroviral perturbation make it possible to solve the roles of individual r
egulatory molecules in successive\, highly-defined developmental contexts.
