SUMMARY:Frontiers of Science: Prof. Miguel Soares
DESCRIPTION:12th November at 12:00\nOnsite event\nin Presidentti auditorium
 \, BioCity\nAutumn 2026 poster\n\nProf. Miguel Soares\, Gulbenkian Institu
te for Molecular Medicine\, Portugal\nMetabolic adaptation as a defence st
rategy against infection\n\nHost: Antonio Sousa (aggode@utu.fi)\n\nCoffee
and sandwich served at 11:45\, first come first serve!\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSix P
hD researchers and early-career postdocs are welcome to have lunch and dis
cuss with Prof. Soares after the seminar. This is a great possibility to l
earn hosting skills in a friendly environment and create connections for f
uture. Everyone is welcome to join\, BioCity Turku will offer the lunch.\n
\nIf you got interested\, please send an email to biocityturku@bioscience.
fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nProf. Soares’ lab studies how immunity evolved in multi
cellular organisms as a means to limit the fitness costs imposed by symbio
tic interactions with different classes of microbes. Resistance is a cardi
nal feature of immunity\, whereby soluble and cellular components of the i
mmune system sense and target pathogenic microorganisms for containment\,
destruction\, or expulsion. In addition\, multicellular organisms deploy a
nother defense strategy\, referred to as disease tolerance\, which does no
t target microbes directly. This evolutionarily conserved strategy relies
on stress responses that rewire host energy metabolism. At the Inflammatio
n Laboratory\, researchers aim to identify and characterize how these stre
ss responses engage inter-organ communication processes that rewire energy
metabolism in order to limit the fitness costs associated with infections
caused by different classes of microbes. The objective is to provide a tr
ansformative understanding of host–microbe interactions and their transl
ational impact on the treatment of global infectious diseases.\n\n&nbsp\;\
