SUMMARY:Frontiers of Science: Prof. Mohamed Bentires-Alj
DESCRIPTION:12th February at 12:00\nOnsite event\nin Presidentti auditorium
 \, BioCity\nSpring 2026 program\n\nProf. Mohamed Bentires-Alj\, University
of Basel\, Switzerland\nBreast Tumor Heterogeneity and Metastasis: From M
echanistic Insights to Functional Personalized Therapy\n\nHost: Jenny Pess
a (jenny.pessa@abo.fi)\n\nCoffee and sandwich served at 11:45\, first come
first serve!\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSix PhD researchers and early-career postdocs
are welcome to have a lunch and discuss with Prof. Bentires-Alj after the
seminar. This is a great possibility to learn hosting skills in a friendly
environment and create connections for future. Everyone is welcome to joi
n\, BioCity Turku will offer the lunch.\n\nIf you got interested\, please
send an email to biocityturku@bioscience.fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nBentires-Alj lab
explores both cell autonomous (genetics\, epigenetics\, and proteomics) a
nd non-cell autonomous mechanisms (immune cells\, adipcoytes\, and other s
tromal factors). They use systems medicine quantitative methods\, syntheti
 c lethal screens\, unbiased pooled shRNA\, CRISPR\, transposon-based scree
ns\, and hypothesis-driven approaches. Computational biology is a very imp
ortant part of their research. Moreover\, the team uses multiphoton intrav
ital imaging to assess the interactions between cancer cells and immune ce
lls.\n\nThese interdisciplinary projects seek to elucidate the integrated
effects of signaling pathways and epigenetics on breast cell fate and tumo
r heterogeneity\, and to leverage this mechanistic understanding into ther
apy. To this end\, Bentires-Alj lab collaborates with clinicians and have
built a Breast Cancer Personalized Medicine Team which should ultimately i
mprove treatment for patients in Basel and throughout the world.\n\n&nbsp\
