Dr. Tuure Kinnunen is currently Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Eastern Finland. He finished his MD in 2005 and his PhD in immunology in 2007 at the University of Kuopio. Between 2010-2011 he worked as post-doctoral fellow at Yale University, USA. After returning to Finland, he finished his clinical training in Clinical Microbiology in 2012.
The research of Dr. Kinnunen has focused on translational human immunology, in particular examining the mechanisms of allergy, autoimmune diseases and primary immune deficiencies. Since starting his own research group in 2012, the main research focus of the group has been immunology of type 1 diabetes. In collaboration with the Finnish Type 1 Diabetes Prediction and Prevention (DIPP) Study the group has completed multiple studies analyzing alterations in blood immune cell populations during the progression to clinical type 1 diabetes.
