What if finding a life-saving cancer drug meant searching through more molecules than there are atoms in the universe? That is exactly the challenge researchers face. There are approximately 10⁶⁰ possible molecules that could exist based on the rules of chemistry alone. Traditionally, finding the right drug candidate meant relying on guesswork or accidental discoveries — an incredibly slow and expensive process. But today, we use computers to screen tens of millions of compounds against specific biological targets, narrowing the search down to a handful of the most promising candidates. These are then tested in the lab — first to see if they bind to the target protein, and then on living cancer cells. In this video, Pekka Roivas explains how combining computational screening with laboratory experiments is building a faster, smarter and more reproducible workflow for cancer drug discovery.
